Hermes Agent costs nothing to download. What you pay for is everything around it: the AI model it thinks with, the machine it lives on, the extra tools it uses, and the person who sets it up and checks its work. At published prices on October 15, 2026, the cash side of a small setup runs from $0 to about $25 a month, and climbs from there if the agent needs a bigger model budget. The time side is usually the bigger number.
| Line on the bill | What it covers | Published price, checked October 15, 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| The software | Hermes Agent itself | $0, under the MIT license, business use included |
| The AI model | The thinking it does for you | Nous Portal: free tier $0, Plus $20 a month, Super $100, Ultra $200. Each paid tier comes with credits worth slightly more than you paid |
| The machine | A computer that stays awake | A computer you already own: $0. A small rented server: about $5 a month in the project's own example. Hosted by Nous: billed daily from your credits, $2 minimum to start |
| Extra tools | Web search, images, voice, browsing | Charged per use, from the same credits |
| The person | Setup, then checking and fixing | Your team's hours, or someone's fee |
The first four lines are published numbers you can look up. The fifth is the one that decides whether this was a good idea, and nobody can quote it for you. The worksheet near the end puts your own number next to the published ones.
Is Hermes Agent free, and what is not free?
The software is free. Hermes Agent is built by Nous Research and released under the MIT license, so a business can use it, change it and run it without paying for it. There is no trial to start and no seat to buy. What Hermes Agent is and what it does covers the product itself.
Free software is not a free assistant. An agent that reads your email, updates your task board and sends you a morning summary is using a paid AI model every time it works, on a machine that has to stay on, under rules somebody wrote. Those three things are the bill.
What does the AI model cost each month?
This is the line that moves the most. Nous Research sells access through Nous Portal, which its documentation calls the recommended way to run Hermes Agent: one sign-in covers hundreds of models plus built-in tools, instead of a separate account with each AI company.
| Tier | Price a month | Credits included | Rollover cap |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | $0, free models only, standard limits | None |
| Plus | $20 | $22 | $10 |
| Super | $100 | $110 | $50 |
| Ultra | $200 | $220 | $100 |
Read those credits as a usage budget, not as unlimited use. Plus gives you $22 of model and tool usage a month for $20, and $10 of anything unspent carries into next month. You can also top up in $10 to $200 steps instead of moving up a tier. We read those prices and tiers from the Portal's own plans section on October 15, 2026.
Credits buy text. AI companies bill by the amount an agent reads and writes, quoted per million tokens, which is roughly 750,000 words. The Portal's catalog lists the rate for every model it carries, and the spread is the part worth knowing:
| Model | Reading, per million | Writing, per million |
|---|---|---|
| Claude Haiku 5.5 | $0.10 | $0.50 |
| GPT-5 Mini | $0.25 | $2.00 |
| Gemini 3.1 Flash Lite | $0.25 | $1.50 |
| Claude Sonnet, latest | $2.00 | $10.00 |
| GPT-5 Pro | $15.00 | $120.00 |
The cheapest model on that list is more than a hundred times cheaper than the most expensive one. A daily summary job that costs pennies a month on Haiku costs real money on GPT-5 Pro, doing work that did not need it. Choosing per job is the single biggest thing you control on this line, and which AI model to use for which job works through the choice.
There are two ways to spend less here. The free tier runs free models at standard limits, which is enough to try the thing out. And the Portal says you can connect an eligible ChatGPT account for supported model use with no paid Nous subscription at all, with tools and hosting charged separately.
What does the machine cost?
Hermes Agent has to live somewhere that stays awake, because the point of an agent is that it works when you are not watching. There are three usual answers.
A computer you already own costs nothing extra. An old desktop in the office works. It has to stay on and online, which in practice means nobody closes the lid, nobody unplugs it and your internet is reliable.
A small rented server costs about $5 a month. That figure is the project's own example, from its team assistant tutorial, which notes that Hermes itself is light and the expensive work happens at the AI company, not on your machine.
Hosting it with Nous is the no-fuss option. Hermes Cloud runs your agent on an always-on instance with its own workspace, set up in about a minute. It bills from your credit balance once a day, after the fact, metered by the second while the agent is running and storage only while it is stopped. You need $2 in credits to start one, and model and tool use are charged on top. The sizes and their per-day prices appear on the screen where you start one, after you sign in, so we cannot quote them here.
What it costs in your team's time
Installing Hermes Agent takes minutes. Writing down what it should do, what it must never do and who reads its output takes much longer, and that work does not end at launch.
We run our own company on it, so this is the line we can speak to directly. As of October 15, 2026 we have 13 agents and 93 jobs that run on a schedule, 82 of them switched on. Our upkeep hours go to two things, and neither shows up in anyone's pricing page.
The first is the hour after a wrong answer. An agent does something subtly off, nobody notices for a day or two, and then somebody has to find it, fix the output and correct what the agent learned.
The second is the hour after an update. On Sunday, October 11, a routine update to our own setup left every agent unable to reach the AI model it was configured to use. The break landed at 3:50 in the afternoon, a stopgap went in at 4:34, and the real fix shipped that evening. None of that was on anyone's Sunday plan.
After the first month, we plan on two to four hours a month per agent for checking and fixing, on top of the block of hours it took to define the job. That is our own planning rule rather than an industry figure, and your first agent will probably cost more than that while you learn what it gets wrong.
Price those hours at what the person doing them actually costs you, including payroll taxes and the work they are not doing instead. For most small businesses that is $40 to $100 an hour. Three hours a month at $60 is $180, which is more than every other line on this bill put together.
Your monthly number
Fill in your own figures. The first three lines you can look up. The last two you have to estimate honestly, which is the whole exercise.
| Line | How to work it out | Your number |
|---|---|---|
| The AI model | The tier that fits, or last month's usage from the Portal | |
| The machine | $0 on a computer you own, about $5 rented, or billed daily if hosted | |
| Extra tools | Web search, images, voice and browsing, charged per use | |
| Setup time | Hours to define the job, connect your tools and test it, times your loaded hourly cost, spread over 12 months | |
| Upkeep time | Hours a month checking and fixing, times your loaded hourly cost | |
| Your monthly total |
Now put that total next to the price of having it done for you. Ours is $1,000 once and from $200 a month, which covers the build, the hosting and the maintenance. If your two time lines come to more than the gap between your cash total and that price, you are paying more to run it yourself, in a currency you never invoice.
A caution on your own arithmetic: people underestimate setup hours, because defining the job is thinking work that does not feel like work. And the upkeep hours are owed by one specific person, who already has another job.
When running it yourself is the cheaper answer
Sometimes it genuinely is. Run it yourself when someone on your team already works with software and has real hours free, when the job is small and nothing bad happens if the agent is wrong for a day, or when learning how this works is part of the point. At that size the cash cost can be close to nothing, and the experience is worth something on its own. If you are picking between the two free options for that route, what actually decides Hermes Agent against OpenClaw is who will keep it running.
Have it done for you when none of that is true: when nobody owns it after launch, when the work touches customers, money or anything you would have to apologize for, or when the only person who understands the setup could leave. How much an AI agent costs to build compares the wider market, and the four ways a business can get an AI agent covers the options between these two.
Frequently asked questions
Does Hermes Agent cost money?
Not for the software. Hermes Agent is free under the MIT license, business use included. You pay for the AI model it uses, the machine it runs on, any extra tools such as web search or images, and the time it takes someone to set it up and keep it working.
What is the cheapest way to run Hermes Agent?
Free models on Nous Portal's free tier, running on a computer you already own. That is $0 a month in cash. You are trading money for limits and for your own time, which is a fair trade while you are trying it out and a poor one once a real job depends on it.
Do I need a Nous Portal subscription?
No. The free tier is $0, you can pay as you go with top-ups from $10, and the Portal says an eligible ChatGPT account can be connected for supported model use with no paid subscription. Paid tiers add monthly credits, access to hundreds of models and higher limits.
Is there a free trial of Hermes Agent?
There is nothing to trial, because the software is free to begin with. The nearest thing is the $0 tier with free models, which costs nothing and asks for no card.
What does Hermes Cloud cost?
It is billed daily from your Nous credits, based on what the agent actually used that day: compute metered by the second while it runs, and storage only while it is stopped. Starting one needs $2 in credits. Model and tool use are charged separately, and the current per-day price for each size shows in the Portal when you start one.
Put a real number against one job
The honest way to price this is one job at a time: the thing you would hand over first, who checks it and what it costs you today. Bring that one job and we will scope it with you, including what it would cost to run yourself.
